AAAS MEETING:
Power From Pond Scum

WASHINGTON, D.C.--At the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, held here 17 to 22 February, scientists described two new methods for coaxing algae into churning out hydrogen, the cleanest fuel there is. Currently, they are only producing a small fraction of the hydrogen that theoretical models suggest they can, but experts say the technology is worth pursuing as an alternative to using photovoltaics or wind power to split water.
