Consumer Power Heralds Hard Times for Researchers

Since the European public became concerned about transgenic food, researchers have been hit by the fallout: reduced funding from governments and industry. Although officials of the European Union deny that plant research is being deliberately short-changed in the fifth Framework program, the E.U.'s latest 5-year effort to support cross-border R&D collaborations, others concede that plant biotech faces more hurdles within the current Framework than in previous programs. And multinational corporations always have the option to move their research efforts to parts of the world where conditions are more favorable, which could mean that European plant science will lose out in the long run.
