POSTDOCS:
Academy Plans Guide to Improve Status
Jeffrey Mervis
Late last month, the National Academy of Sciences held a workshop aimed at improving the status of the 40,000 postdocs who contribute mightily to the U.S. research enterprise but rarely receive commensurate pay, rights, or recognition. The attendees were there to offer advice on a publication due out in the fall called the "Guide to the Postdoctoral Experience," which will describe issues facing these fledgling scientists and advise all the players of their rights and responsibilities.
