SPACE SCIENCE:
Forecasting the Storms and Showers of Space

As the sun climbs toward its 11-year activity peak, clouds of plasma and bursts of radiation, which can disrupt power grids and communications satellites, are buffeting the planet. Reliable predictions of these solar storms may be on the way, too. NASA is planning to send up new research satellites to track solar storms, new instruments will be added to weather satellites to provide critical information about space weather as it happens, and researchers are refining computer models for forecasting storms and their effects.
