Toxicity Testing: The Many Arts of Persuasion

Last October, Vice President Al Gore announced a 6-year program to rapidly collect health and safety data on 2800 major industrial chemicals. But animal rights groups quickly denounced the so-called High Production Volume Challenge because they estimated it would require the destruction of more than a million animals. The groups charged that the killing of so many animals was needless because much of the information already existed, more could be derived from nonanimal tests, and some simply wasn't worth collecting.
