Tension between a trainee and an adviser is not limited to science. But postdocs with grievances may be especially powerless because of their ambiguous status--neither student nor staff--and the tremendous power that faculty members hold over them. Science gives brief descriptions of two conflicts that helped push two postdocs out of science.
