U.S. BUDGET:
Tax Cut Politics Could Swallow Research Gains

For the major science agencies, appropriations bills for the fiscal year beginning on 1 October now being considered by Congress fall several billion dollars short of the Administration's proposals. The critical issue will be whether that shortfall can be funded by breaking politically sensitive limits on domestic spending or diverting money from projected budget surpluses.
