PLANETARY SCIENCE:
A New Look at the Martian Landscape

On page 1495 of this issue, planetary scientists present a precise map of martian topography, accurate around the planet to within 13 meters of elevation. Thanks to the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter, which gathered the data from aboard the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, a diverse array of martian features has now snapped into sharper focus, including the polar ice caps and the plateaus and lowlands that hint at the processes that shaped the planet.
