RESEARCH ETHICS:
Sweden Considers More Oversight of Research

STOCKHOLM--Last month, a committee of parliamentarians issued a sheaf of recommendations designed to increase public oversight of research. Their proposals would subject all academic research involving human subjects or tissue to ethical review, turn the peer review of grants on its head by giving applicants anonymity while revealing the identity of reviewers, and require all graduate students to attend courses in research ethics. The suggested reforms aim to shore up public confidence in science by creating more of a dialogue between researchers and the public.
