Culture Collections Seek Global Help

TOKYO--Collections of tissue cultures, cell lines, bacteria, fungi, and the like don't draw the same attention as do campaigns to save endangered plants and animals. But their value to researchers, industry, and society may be even greater. Last week an international meeting of scientists and government officials drew up a plan to focus on the financial, organizational, and scientific problems facing these collections, and the 29-nation Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development has indicated a willingness to tackle the issue.
