RADIOACTIVE WASTE:
Yucca Mountain Panel Says DOE Lacks Data
Richard A. Kerr
A panel of experts says major questions remain about the suitability of Nevada's Yucca Mountain as a permanent home for spent nuclear fuel from U.S. power plants. The new report casts doubt on current plans by the Department of Energy to make a final decision on the repository site in 2001, now targeted to open in 2010. The report questions a recent DOE assessment that concluded the site would safely store the waste for thousands of years, saying that more data are needed to make such a prediction.
