Search for Neutrino Mass Is Big Stretch for Three Labs

TSUKUBA, JAPAN--Last June, an international team unveiled evidence that neutrinos have mass. But some researchers thought the evidence, like the particles themselves, was a bit insubstantial, as it came from observations of atmospheric neutrinos and not an experiment in which researchers controlled the variables. Now Japanese scientists are tuning up an experiment to provide direct laboratory confirmation of these results by shooting a neutrino stream 250 km through the Earth. The research may also resolve whether a shadowy "sterile" neutrino also exists.
