Harvard University has embarked on a science spending spree intended to keep it at the forefront of several hot areas of academic research. Officials today announced plans to spend up to $200 million over the next 5 years, using money in hand to jump-start about five new interdisciplinary research initiatives. Two centers--focusing on genomics and nanotechnology--are the first across the starting line, and other efforts in neuroscience, computer research, and the links between evolution and global climate change may be launched in the coming year.
