SCIENCE EDUCATION:
NSF to Send College Students Into Schools
Jeffrey Mervis
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has decided to go national with efforts to place science-literate students into elementary and secondary school classrooms. The new program would offer students something on a par with the prestigious NSF graduate research fellowships as a way to help teachers and entice more graduates into science teaching careers. NSF officials have yet to work out details of the program, which would begin with a special grants competition this winter to give out $12 million in 3-year awards to universities.
