Vocal Critic Gets Chance to Put His Ideas Into Practice

TOKYO--Akito Arima, a physicist turned politician, is the first bona fide scientist to head Japan's Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, and Culture (Monbusho) in 50 years. A vocal critic of Japan's current system of higher education and its funding of academic research, Arima joins the government at a time when Japan's two major science funding agencies, Monbusho and the Science and Technology Agency, are being merged and Japan's rigid educational system is being reformed. Science interviews him about the major issues he faces.
