MAGNETIC RESEARCH:
Los Alamos Magnet Leads the Field
Robert F. Service
It shrieks like Godzilla, harnesses the power of 80 diesel locomotives, exerts a force strong enough to crumple the strongest reinforced steel beams, and now it's open for business. Today, officials at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico are scheduled to cut the ribbon on a new magnet capable of generating fields of 60 tesla, about 1 million times stronger than the Earth's own magnetic field.
