TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER:
Small Businesses Get Extra Boost From NSF
Jeffrey Mervis
This month the National Science Foundation (NSF) gave a new twist to a government-wide program it pioneered 20 years ago to help scientists turn a good idea into a commercial product. Recognizing that most of its grantees need more help, NSF has added a third round of funding to its portion of the Small Business Innovation Research program. The program provides money for feasibility studies and prototype development, after which companies are supposed to find investors willing to commercialize the technology. The new wrinkle is likely to rekindle debate over the program's success in generating an economic payoff from federally funded research.
