NEUROBIOLOGY:
Lack of Attention from Loss of Time

A review by Philip W. Gold

ADHD and the Nature of Self Control
Russell A. Barkley
Guilford, New York, 1997. 432 pp. $40. ISBN 1-57230-250-x.

Barkley presents a working model of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that locates the underlying neuroanatomical defect in the prefrontal cortex. Thus the attention breakdown is not the central problem, but only one aspect of a tragic impairment of the individual's ability to integrate information and behavior over time.
