Turbulent Times Mean Trouble for Science

Indonesia's economic crisis has triggered sharp cuts in research funding, leaving scientists scrambling to find other ways to keep their projects alive. This year officials are bracing for a double-digit contraction in the economy, an abrupt turnaround after more than a decade of 7% annual growth rates that fueled significant new investments in research. But the government is continuing international scientific collaborations and providing support for study and training abroad, so researchers are taking a wait-and-see attitude.
