EUROPEAN AIDS RESEARCH:
German Powerhouse Gives AIDS the Cold Shoulder
Michael Balter
According to German AIDS researchers and their international colleagues, Germany has not pulled its weight in the battle against the disease and much of German AIDS research is "unfocused and of limited [scientific] value," despite its tradition as a biomedical research powerhouse. They cite factors such as the relatively modest sums the nation spends on AIDS research, the reluctance of German scientists to go into the field due to the lack of social acceptance of the disease, and the low priority the public places on the research because disease incidence has not been as high as was once projected.
