U.K. Community Finds It's a Jungle Out There

In the early days of the AIDS epidemic, British scientists made several important discoveries that put British AIDS research on the map and led the U.K. Medical Research Council (MRC) to set up a directed program on AIDS in 1987. But in 1994 the MRC terminated the program on the grounds that AIDS researchers no longer needed special treatment to compete for funds with scientists working on other diseases, resulting in a sharp decline not only in funding but also in morale.
