Playing With the Numbers

Although most sequencers say the price to decipher a base of human DNA currently hovers at about 50 cents, Francis Collins, director of the U.S. National Human Genome Research Institute, told Congress in April that NHGRI has only 40 million high-quality bases to show for the $52 million spent thus far, which comes to $1.30 per base. But some researchers argue that these early figures are meaningless because they're based on too little experience.
