ASTRONOMY:
Last Hurrah for an Infrared Satellite
Govert Schilling
Early last month, the European Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) ran out of coolant and had to quit its measurements of the feeble heat radiation from the rest of the universe; in mid-May, it will be shut down for good. ISO lived for 10 months beyond its expected 18-month lifetime, collected more than 26,000 observations from Earth's astronomical backyard to the far reaches of the universe, and made several important findings during its final days.
