DOE Moves to Higher Ground

After 3 years of rocky budgets and partisan criticism, the Department of Energy (DOE) appears to be on the upswing, as civilian basic science is riding high both in the White House and on Capitol Hill and a host of new scientific facilities are slated to open soon. But it remains unclear whether more money will solve continuing problems in managing its network of 26 laboratories or in coordinating R&D efforts across the department.
