Going Against the Flow in China

BEIJING--As work continues on the 1600-meter-long, 185-meter-high Three Gorges Dam, engineers and scientists are debating ways to slow the buildup of silt in the 690-kilometer reservoir it will create as well as how to minimize environmental disruptions. Although the questions are not new, they could change the way the dam is operated. As presently planned, the $30 billion project, scheduled to begin generating power in 2003, will also uproot an estimated 1.2 million people.
