Beyond 'Big Iron' in Supercomputing

URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS--A National Science Foundation effort is going beyond number-crunching muscle to merge supercomputers and visualization into a new information infrastructure. Two large partnerships, the National Computational Science Alliance and the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure--the successors to four national supercomputing centers--will develop software to reap the benefits of the new "parallel" computer architectures and technologies that can coordinate computers and people linked over thousands of kilometers by high-speed networks.
