Asteroid Scare Provokes Soul-Searching

Last week, astronomers created a media storm by announcing that an asteroid could collide with Earth in 2028, only to revise the estimates hours later. To head off future false alarms, some astronomers are now calling for word of such threats to first go out to a small community of colleagues so they can come to a consensus before alerting the public.
