Ames Tackles the Riddle of Life

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA--Researchers are eagerly awaiting the opening of the Astrobiology Institute at NASA's Ames Research Center here next month. NASA is betting that a series of startling discoveries in recent years, such as the possible fossil microbes found in a martian meteorite and evidence of an ocean beneath the ice on the jovian moon Europa, will provide a rich payoff both for Ames and for humanity's understanding of its place in the cosmos. The center's ambitious agenda includes creating a new field of science.
