EMERGING DISEASES:
Celebrated Virus Hunters Set Up Shop in France

PARIS AND LYONS--The Pasteur Institute in Paris has lured Joseph McCormick, a virus hunter made famous by several recent books and TV documentaries, to head its recently created epidemiology and biostatistics unit. The new unit is part of a drive to focus Pasteur's basic research talents more directly on public health problems, particularly infectious diseases. McCormick hopes to use the worldwide Pasteur network of labs to create vaccine testing centers in the developing world, focusing especially on exotic diseases that receive little attention from the pharmaceutical industry.
