AAAS MEETING:
Holding a Nitrogen Grudge

Researchers presented provocative new evidence at the meeting suggesting that land use decades ago dictates how forests today absorb and release nutrients. Contrary to theory, a biogeochemist has found that forests that have had high levels of nitrogen deposition over time are able to absorb more of the element, while forests that have been relatively nitrogen-starved cannot.
