NASA HEADACHE-I:
AXAF Delay Threatens Station, Hubble
Andrew Lawler
What began last summer as a series of minor delays in the development of a giant $2 billion x-ray observatory now threatens to turn into a crisis that could affect this year's launch of the first components of the international space station and a planned 1999 Hubble Space Telescope service mission. NASA officials say that difficulties in completing the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility will postpone its slated 27 August launch aboard the space shuttle Columbia by more than 2 months, sending a ripple effect through the shuttle schedule.
