Science Squeezed Out of Debate

MELBOURNE--Science has played a decidedly minor role in the debate over the refilling of Lake Victoria. As the significance of the site emerged, so did its capacity to attract conflict, turning a golden scientific opportunity to brass because of the political sensitivity of the site. But researchers console themselves with the fact that the artifacts will still be there for study after the political issues are resolved.
