GENOME SEQUENCING:
Laboratory Workhorse Decoded
Elizabeth Pennisi
On page 1453 of this issue, researchers report the complete sequence of all 4.6 million base pairs in the genome of the bacterium Escherichia coli. The achievement not only marks the end of a 15-year race to determine the sequence, but because E. coli has been so well studied over the years, researchers can now use the sequence to provide a coherent picture of the organism's complete biology. It will also help in identifying the genes of higher organisms, and together with the sequences of several other bacteria, it will increase our understanding of bacterial evolution.
