BROOKHAVEN REACTOR:
Panel Favors Restart Option

Last week the troubled High-Flux Beam Reactor (HFBR) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, received a vote of confidence in its future when an outside panel of scientists gave its preliminary approval to a plan that would get the reactor back up and operating within 2 years--and at no more than the $26 million a year already budgeted to operate it. The 32-year-old facility has been closed since last fall. A tritium leak discovered in January outraged community activists on Long Island and led Department of Energy Secretary Federico Peña to cancel the lab operator's contract.
