ANIMALS IN RESEARCH:
Chimp Retirement Plan Proposed

Overpopulation of chimpanzees that have been bred for AIDS research, but not used because the animals proved to be a bad model for the disease, has been reaching crisis proportions. In a report released on 16 July, a panel of experts organized by the National Research Council recommends that the National Institutes of Health acquire the approximately 1000 chimps the government already supports and shelter them for the rest of their lives.
