A big gap in the science behind new clean air regulations is the lack of understanding about how airborne particles could trigger a bout of asthma or cause someone to drop dead of a heart attack. A dozen labs are now racing to find a modus operandi, and some recent results have begun to mimic in animals the mortality patterns seen in people.
