NUCLEAR PHYSICS:
Accelerator Probes the Private Lives of Nucleons

Physicists have unveiled the intimate relations of the protons and neutrons that make up the atomic nucleus by coaxing pairs of protons out of the nucleus just at the moment when their quark cores are touching. The researchers found that individual protons are often interacting far more vigorously with their neighbors than theorists' approximations had suggested.
