New Way to Hit the Hot Spot Hints at a Complex Pacific

The profusion of submerged seamounts that dot the Pacific sea floor is thought to stem from deep-rooted "hot spots" of volcanism. But now a new technique, although it pinpoints the location of a few hot spots, raises questions about whether deep volcanism really spawns the plethora of seamounts.
