AIDS Vaccine:
Looking for Leads in HIV's Battle With Immune System
Jon Cohen
BETHESDA, MARYLAND--A 4-day meeting on AIDS vaccine development, held here at the National Institutes of Health 2 weeks ago, included reports of cutting-edge basic research on how HIV causes disease. Presentations on the protective role played by the immune system's killer cells, called cytotoxic T lymphocytes, gave vaccine developers some new perspectives. Researchers also reported the possible capture of a long-sought factor that provides some protection against HIV, and offered the novel suggestion that a goat virus might provide the basis for an HIV vaccine.
