Genomics: A Catalog of Cancer Genes at the Click of a Mouse
Elizabeth Pennisi
An ambitious project that aims at nothing less than a complete catalog of all the genes expressed in cancer cells will debut next month. The Cancer Genome Anatomy Project will classify tumor genes by the type of cancer cell they came from and the degree of the cell's malignancy. The information--available at no charge on the World Wide Web--should help researchers determine how gene expression changes as cancer develops. Ultimately, physicians may be able to base a patient's diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment on the status of a particular tumor's genes, rather than on its appearance under the microscope.
