Biomedical Research: NIH Plans Peer-Review Overhaul

The National Institutes of Health took the first step in an attempt to bring substantive change to its peer-review procedures on 5 May, when NIH director Harold Varmus announced that he has ended a long-running debate over proposed new criteria for judging the quality of grant proposals. Varmus overruled some of NIH's top leaders by deciding that beginning next year, the study sections will rate proposals on a new criterion: innovation.
