A year ago, the Hubble Space Telescope took the most penetrating look ever out into space and back in time, capturing galaxies and their precursors when the universe was less than 10% of its current age. Now astronomers are extracting cosmic history from the image. Among other things, they've chronicled how the universe turned primordial gas into stars and galaxies and picked out individual objects that may be the most distant ever seen.
