Two recently identified proteins are moving onto center stage in Alzheimer's disease research: the presenilins, which are mutated in about half of all inherited cases. A recent crop of results implies that these proteins play a role in the cell's internal protein-handling systems. If so, faulty presenilins could contribute to the abnormal buildup of other proteins seen in the brains of Alzheimer's patients.
