After spending the past 2 years brusquely rejecting demands to eliminate the Department of Energy (DOE), the White House last week signaled its willingness to discuss a radical overhaul of the $16 billion a year agency. The talks, if successful, could mean big changes in DOE's sprawling network of laboratories and in disciplines ranging from high-energy physics to genetics research.
