Moscow--Two Russian scientists began a hunger strike last week to protest continuing delays in paying employee salaries at the roughly 300 institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). And, adding a new dimension to their cause, a government audit of RAS finances has found that up to a quarter of the money earmarked for salaries last winter was diverted to other uses by RAS officials. "The champing hog of the Mafia capitalism is already crunching the bones of science," says one striker, academician Vladimir Strakhov, about the government's failure to keep its promise to spend at least 4% of the country's budget on research.
