La Jolla, California--After several years of coasting along under acting directors, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies has a new leader: cell biologist Thomas Pollard. Pollard, who is moving his lab from Johns Hopkins University, faces some big challenges in raising the elite institution's relatively meager endowment and expanding its research base.
