Perspective

Barry R. Bloom

To many people it is unfathomable that after more than 10 years of research, there is no human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine ready for large-scale efficacy trials. A complex web of scientific, political, and social issues remains to be untangled. Barry Bloom (Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, USA) takes a hard look at the fundamental questions that must be answered before a vaccine against acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) becomes a reality.

The author is in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Department of Microbiology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY 10461, USA.
