Baltimore--Robert Gallo recently ended a 30-year stint at the U.S. National Cancer Institute, where his lab first published convincing evidence in 1984 that HIV causes AIDS, to run a brand-new institute here. Known as the Institute of Human Virology, its launch, combined with a recent landmark paper Gallo co-authored, provides ample evidence that at least some old guard researchers in the AIDS community remain a force to be reckoned with.
