Eric Lander of the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is legendary for presenting dazzling new technologies at the annual genome meeting at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, and last month's 1996 gathering was no exception. Lander unveiled applications for a "DNA chip," developed by Affymetrix, a biotechnology company in Santa Clara, California. Built with the same techniques as computer chips, the DNA chip holds thousands of tailor-made stretches of DNA. And although its first use will be in evaluating markers for genetic mapping, the chip could one day be a versatile tool for rapidly scanning entire genomes.
