Chicago--For years scientists have had only a sketchy view of the Andes, as the lofty peaks defied easy exploration. But recent expeditions have yielded a new view of these mountains, as discussed at a recent interdisciplinary meeting at The Field Museum in Chicago. New data shows surprising geological complexity, and suggest that many of the Andes' unique animals are members of ancient lineages.
